I did not like the movie Birdman. Anyone who has ever suffered from depression or knows someone who has will probably feel this movie makes a joke of it.

It was the worst movie I have ever seen. Society accepts this trash as something good? You have got to be kidding me, this world is upside down and now we are told to think this was something ok to watch? Sad day especially coming from LCMS!

    Comment on Birdman Review

I have not seen the film and I probably will not, but based in the synopsis and this review it seems a metaphor for the world today – one struggling to cope in the now (with disturbing voices and images everywhere telling us to do things that should horrify us, but they are so prevalent that we just deal with them because we can no longer tune them out) all while pining for the nostalgia of what used to be in simpler times and better days.

And suicide is about saying I’m tired, I’m depleted, I’ve had enough, I quit. But sometimes even if you try you can’t quit and your life goes on, you battle on, through the voices and images that tell you to do things that should horrify you…and you pine for better days…

As a Christian, this is a hard msg to hear because there is this idea that because we are Christian (chosen, redeemed) that these things should not be part of our lives. But they are for many who love and follow Christ. We should not ignore it, glamorize it, or fear it, but pray without ceasing that the Lord who has already defeated death and the grave would will that peace be granted to the hearts and minds of those who suffer with depression and mental illness (because they do suffer).

Father, I pray that you protect those who are suffering from harming themselves. Protect their hearts and minds from the thoughts the devil would use to destroy them from the inside out, and keep those same hearts and minds securely in you, our Christ. And, Lord, we continue to pray for you to heal their minds and make them well and whole even as you have made our souls well by the work that you’ve done. AMEN.

    3 John 1:2 (ESV)
Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.
