    It’s a scary world today. I think about my future and my two young daughters. I give 10% to my church. Our pastors have been putting on a full court press for a month, to get the congregation to give even more. This is built into the sermon every Sunday. Our church is involved with many outreach programs; locally and worldwide. I feel uncomfortable and am thinking about talking to my family about leaving for another church. I just feel my church is spreading itself too thin. Also, I’m not happy with how many LCMS borrow money for building projects.

      Don, I read your reply with great interest. I am a layman who is deeply involved in church ministry, including finances. I love to give and to teach church and individual stewardship. I urge you to not quit your church but to speak to the Pastor about your feelings and, if you have not, to go see first hand the benefits that your giving is creating in the lives of others. I am convinced beyond all doubt that God blesses good use of His resources and that we can be both generous and good managers.

    2. CHRISTIAN PRIESTS???? BY STEVE FINNELL

      Are there Christian priests mentioned in the Bible? The only high priest mentioned is Jesus Christ. The priesthood of all believers is mentioned, however, there is not an office of Christian priest for selected individuals.

      JESUS IS THE HIGH PRIEST!

      Hebrews 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession;

      JESUS IS THE HIGH PRIEST!

      Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

      The so-called Christians priests of today cannot grant forgiveness from sins nor can they make atonement for the sins of the people. Only Jesus is a high priest.

      Hebrews 7:11-12 Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also.

      The Levitical priesthood ended when Jesus died on the cross. There is and never has been a Christian priesthood of individual priests, overseeing, or acting as priests of congregations. THE INDIVIDUAL CHRISTIAN PRIEST IS A MAN-MADE PRIESTHOOD.

      Hebrews 8:3-4 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices; so it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer. 4 Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law;

      Christians nor anyone else are under the Law. If Jesus were here on earth He would not be a priest. Why would any Christian, here on earth, consider himself to be a priest able to offer gifts or sacrifices.

      THERE IS ONLY ONE PRIEST STANDING BETWEEN MAN AND GOD. THAT PRIEST IS JESUS CHRIST.

      1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Jesus Christ,

      A HOLY PRIESTHOOD, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD INCLUDES ALL CHRISTIANS.

      1 Peter 2:4-9 ….5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ…… 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’ own possession….

      Peter was talking to Christians who were throughout the world. (Peter 1:1). Peter was not addressing certain individuals who were selected to the office of priest.

      THE OFFICE OF CHRISTIAN PRIEST IS NOT MENTION IN THE BIBLE. Christian priests are only mentioned in church catechisms and other extra-Biblical books. Man-made writings are not Scripture.

      Ephesians 4:11-12 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for equipping of the saints for the work of service, to building up the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith…

      You will notice priests were not mentioned as equipping the saints. Why? Because Jesus is the priest. There is no office of “CHRISTIAN PRIEST.”

    As long as the church lets the Government out voice the church on all issues, it will

    continue to spiral down. The fight for FREEDOM is the last front. We need to come

    together with ONE voice and continue the Fight for Freedom around the world.

    When we start looking for Government to protect us, we truly have lost our way. Only

    Christ can protect us. Me and my wife agree that “Working together to become ONE in

    in Christ” is our only defense from the Evil one! Amen.

    Definite faith problem. Members have to work toward the 10% tithe first. This takes the building of their faith. “If they give the money to God, will they have enough for themselves?” Once people find that God will bless them as they give and that they can’t out give God, then they will have enough faith to be the good givers to help the poor. If you don’t do it this way, they will give to the poor when asked, but will cut back on church giving. Faith has to be built first.

    At our house we have no flock to fleece so we have to cut back. Maybe LCMS should try that.

    Sorry, but perhaps the biggest reason people don’t give to the church is because they don’t know where it goes. I have consistently seen people give large sums to people who are in need. However, churchgoers are tired and fed up with giving money to the business end of the church. The building fund, the new sound board, the new fellowship building, the latest remodeling….the list goes on. Put a REAL need out in front of the people and they will dig in their pockets so deep they’ll hit their ankles. I’ve seen it over and over again. When the church quits acting like a business and starts acting like a kingdom, then people will see the vision and give generously.

    Above all, all tithes and offerings should be given with pure motives and an attitude of worship to God and service to the body of Christ. “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
