I am a lifelong member of LCMS congregations, and would like to receive a draft of “A Theological Statement for Mission in the 21st Century,” a document mandated by Res. 1-03A of the 2013 Synod convention. Presently, I am on a Church Council and elected Chair of Mission and Evangelism. For years I have engaged in domestic and foreign mission work, studied missiology, and was on assignment to one church planting effort in Jamaica. Thanking you in advance for your consideration.

The document is being vetted through various boards and councils before being released to the Synod-at-large. Thank you for your patience.

I, too, would be interested in seeing the “Theological Statement for Mission in the 21st Century” document as soon as possible. Is it true that two career missionaries, Dr. John Mehl and Dr. Brent Smith were “re-positioned” from their area directorships and subsequently resigned from International Missions of the LCMS because they were told they did not understand “Ecclesial Missiology”? I can find no clear definition of what that means or implies ANYWERE. I have asked the BIM for clarification, and received none. In the field, two men lost their careers, and the LCMS International Missions lost two men with 36 years combined experience. Who sets the direction of the Missions of the Synod, the Synod in Convention? the Boards? Or the Office of International Missions? I think these are legitimate questions to be asked before we lose more fine missionaries from the field.

The document is being vetted through various boards and councils before being released to the Synod-at-large. It may take several months for the document to be released, since the boards, which need to review it, often meet only quarterly.
