Thank you for this fascinating report on Pope Francis. It is quite a welcome surprise that this is being sent by an agency of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, a denomination not usually regarded as ecumenically open to other church traditions. However, I am pleased that the LCMS participated in the U.S. Lutheran-Roman Catholic dialogues together with other Lutherans from 1965 to 1995. Agreement was reached on “The Status of the Nicene Creed as Dogma of the Church,” “One Baptism for the Remission of Sins,” “The Eucharist as Sacrifice,” “Eucharist and Ministry,” “Papal Primacy and the Universal Church,” “Teaching Authority & Infallibility in the Church,” “Justification by Faith,” “The One Mediator, the Saints, and Mary,” and “Scripture and Tradition.” Hopefully, these accomplishments will be given more publicity.

Please continue to inform the LCMS laity and clergy of significant ecumenical developments. During a Concordia Seminary reunion on the St. Louis campus earlier this year , I was pleased to learn from Dr. Erik Herrmann, professor in the Department of Historical Theology, that a course on the ecumenical movement is being developed. Praise God!

    Together in Christ,
The Rev. John George Huber, D.Min.,
Pastor Emeritus, University Lutheran Church, La Jolla, California
