Both LCMS seminaries are offering Lent-related workshops for pastors in January.
Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, has planned a pre-Lenten workshop, “Seeing is Not Believing: The Passion Story in Mark,” for Jan. 20.
In a news release about the workshop, the seminary notes that mid-week Lenten services offer the opportunity to contemplate the account of Christ’s passion in the Gospel of Mark, which is not part of the Sunday lectionary cycle.
The first part of the workshop will focus on an overview of Mark and exegesis of Mark’s passion and resurrection accounts, led by the Rev. Dr. James Voelz, dean of faculty at the seminary.
After lunch, weekly service themes will be explained by Voelz and Concordia Seminary Professors Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Gibbs, Rev. Dr. Joel Biermann, Rev. Dr. Charles Arand and Rev. Dr. Kent Burreson. Included in the service themes will be Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Resurrection of Our Lord.

Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind., will offer pastors the opportunity to explore “Christ’s Mission from the Cross” at its Jan. 16 Lenten Preaching Workshop.
Led by the Rev. Dr. K. Detlev Schulz, chairman of the seminary’s Pastoral Ministry and Missions Department, the workshop will focus on developing sermons on:
- Christ’s passion and death as sacrifice and high priest;
- our preparation for Lent through repentence;
- discipleship under the cross;
- Christ’s invitation to the table to come and eat; and
- the cross and empty tomb as reconciliation and forgiveness for all.
The workshop will cover Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, and all mid-week Lenten services, as well as Holy Week services, if time is available.
